Monday Morning Smiles

I began taking apart and packing away all the Christmas glory over the weekend.
Gesh, what a job.....all the hauling of bins just about did me in.
I woke this morning with an aching back!
But, that was quickly forgotten and I'm smiling now.......
I got mail!
A pic of my grandies at bath time was waiting for me.

The bears run amok and get into everything!
This little Puddin Head is so nosy and just loves poking into all the stuff in the studio....

She loves playing with the rubber-bands.

I've told her and told her.....plastic bags are NOT a toy!

And I wonder why on some days I don't get anything done.

Oh how I love you Puddin Head!

Good giggly morning everyone.
It's cold here......very cold.
More snow is on the way later today. No worries, I'll be toasty warm....playing in the studio all day with the bears and beasties.
It will be a perfect day for hot chocolate! Lots of hot chocolate.

I think they're stinkin' sweet.....I've filled all sorts of jars with them.

While I was in the garage yesterday I saw a mouse!
I ran screaming like a little girl into the house......
a MOUSE! a MOUSE!!!
Safe inside, I giggled and remembered doing this as a little girl, screaming and leaping onto a chair in hysterics.
Mom told me....."that mouse is more afraid of you, than you are of it!"

With this in mind..........I thought of that mouse in the garage.....

of it running and screaming.......

with a pending snow storm looming for later tonight, I must make sure I have the kitchen stocked with all the necessities. Just in case we're snowed in.

The cupcakes are in the oven now. Later this afternoon.... frosting and sprinkling pink and red jimmies.

I'm making cake and eating it too.
Let it snow! I'll be ready.

Hello everyone!
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Christmas.
Our Christmas was filled with lots of family, friends and a whole lot of love and fun.

Our house is now quiet, the kids and grandies have gone home. It's a little lonely, but now I'm looking forward to getting back into the studio and making stuff.....even if it's just a mess.......I want to get in there and create.

I made this special Christmas slipper pin keeper as a gift for a special friend.
I've got several more slippers in the works and will be getting back to work on these soon.

My Grandies will be arriving today!

The little man called me last night to tell he's coming. He also told me he was making "snowman soup". Being 3, everything is so exciting.
I'm sure we'll be making lots of snowman soup while they are here.
Little one gave me the recipe.....
cocoa, 3 marshmallows and a candy cane.

Holiday Happenings

The studio is a buzz with holiday happenings.
The excitement is mounting........me and the elves are in high gear.........making, creating, oodles of festive bears and beasties.

A charming couple in Arizona requested a "Country Christmas" giraffe.
ohhhhhhhhhh.....she is lovely.
This spotsie beauty is a brand new size........30".
She's decked out in holiday finery ........vintage clothing, a jacket and bonnet created from an antique crazy quilt and stocking full of vintage goodies.

Must dash for now........lots more fa la la la laaaaaaaa-ing to do.

Birthday Love

A special lady I know, a.k.a. Little Red, had a birthday a few weeks ago.
I've had the privilege of creating special pieces for her for the past few years.
These commissioned bears & beasties have come about through Jen O'Connor.....
Earth Angels, at the special request of Lil Red's hubby.

It's always great fun creating for "Little Red". I think the best part is teasing her for weeks about what I'm making..........Little Red loves a surprise, but she really loves "hints" and playing the guessing game. I must admit, this is my favorite part too.

This is Elsa........"Queen Elsa" as Little Red has renamed her.
Elsa is my take on altered art.
Created on top an old doll trunk and dressed to the nines in vintage clothing.

When opened, the trunk is full of all the things Lil Red loves........
books and vintage sewing items.

Let There Be Light

With the days being shorter and gloomier, the studio has been so dark. I have a huge window with a southern exposure, but, I still feel like I've been working with my eyes closed.
So, with the mister in tow, we went downtown to a large lighting fixture store.

I wandered the many isles in search of the perfect light for the studio.
Eureka! I found just what I wanted!
Most importantly...... it can handle 150 watts!

Mr. Steiner got it all wired up and hung for me. All in the same day. I did help a little.

Oh happy day.........
I now have the brightest light in the house!

It's been a quiet one here and that is perfectly okay.
We're still nibbling on all the yummy turkey day left overs.

This weekend kicks off the holiday season in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with the bi-annual tradition of The Festival of The Trees.

Local businesses, artisans, civic groups and individuals are invited to display a tree, decorate a room, or create an exhibit. The outdoor displays are spectacular and there are several beautiful old buildings all decorated.

My Mom and I attended this event 4 years ago and it was wonderful!

I created "Chandler" especially for this holiday event. He's a big, 36", handsome teddy wearing vintage long-johns.
Wendy/Collins Gifts has been participating by decorating trees or creating entire room vignettes for many years.
I'm thrilled Wendy has continued to ask me to created something fun to be part of her display.

Out on a Whim

It's a winter wonderland in the studio these days.........I've been starting and stopping and just plain out on a whim. Doing the must dos.....but more so doing what ever I please at the moment.
I'm tickled with all the wintry delights taking shape.

This little gal makes my heart sing and makes me giggle too.........I've had her kicking around in my head for a long time.
Inspired by the antique "dolly/Eskimo" bears, I just had to bring her to life.
I created her head using a spun cotton technique and gave her antique shoe button eyes.
For a bit more whimsy I made her a wee little snowlady necklace.

On To the Next Holiday

Halloween is over, although all of my Halloween displays in the house will stay in place for a couple more weeks.
I've begun to pack away all the Halloween and Autumn goodies for bear making. It's now time for me to plunge into all things wintery.
My picker friend brought me two big vintage paper mache' boots last weekend. I'm always happy to get these.

I've spent the past couple evenings sifting through old holiday magazines...I've got boxes of these. It's always fun to haul them out and see all the pretty pictures again. So much inspiration.
I really, really miss County Home and Home Companion magazines! Don't you?
The Christmas issues were so packed full of eye candy and holiday decorating fun.

I did get one new sweet little book last week. I found it on Ebay.
"Tis The Season" by James Cramer. It's delightful. He did a book several years ago........"Seven Gates"....this book is truly fabulous as all the seasons are covered.

Yesterday was a cold, dark and dreary day.........there was a knock, knock at the door.
I'm always excited at the thought I might have a visitor......life is very solitary in my little studio and the smallest, simplest things amuse and delight me.

The Fed Ex man was at the door with a big, unmarked box.
Oh goodie, goodie.

I ripped that box open with my teeth and let out shrill sounds of ghoulish delight.

Mister Steiner (xoxo) treated me to "Big Red". A shiny red Kitchen Aide Mixer.
hmmm...maybe it's his subtle way of saying....FEED ME.
I have longed for one of these beauties forever.
I do not like to cook, I do not cook.
BUT, I do love to bake!

I'll be baking up a batch of tasty morsels tonight.
A Vulture is at the ready......ready to grab anything that hits the floor.
I already know I'm going to love Big Red and I'll be making lots and lots of Christmas cookies this year.

Estate Sale Frenzy

A couple days ago while the mister and I were out and about doing the weekly errands........we stopped at an estate sale.
Holy moly. I hit the mother load of vintage finds.

I couldn't get home fast enough to go through all the bags and bins.
Mister Steiner set up a table in the garage for me to sort and organize everything.

Here's a few pics of the haul..........

The table was heaped with vintage clothing! 48 pieces of clothing. A dozen bonnets.......and a sweet little purse.

I spent the past two nights hand washing load after load of dresses.........capes.....petticoats and more. Everything now is springtime fresh and I can hardly wait to make beasties to dress.

I was especially excited when I opened a bin full of vintage quilts.
I thought these were truly meant for me to find.........all in red and white.....a couple crazy quilts too.
The bears and beasties just love wearing coats and trousers created from old quilts. I'm thinking a Santa robe will be fab too.

Oh my gosh, mounds of antique lace.........table coverings..........bed coverings and a huge stack of old feed sack fabric.

I couldn't resist grabbing stacks and stacks of wool. A couple antique sleigh blankets sealed the deal.

All that's left for me to do now is figure out where the heck I'm gonna store this stuff!

The past few days in the studio have been very productive.
The last of the Halloween orders are just about finished. I'm gearing up to jump into full time winter holiday mode.
My gosh, where the heck has the year gone??!
I took advantage of the last warm weather days and got a bit ahead of myself with preparing for the wintery pieces to come.
Paint drys so much quicker outside.

I also had another one of my bright ideas........the ones that keep me up half the night.
I'm loving it so far!

I made the pumpkin man 2 years ago and the pea pod guy with glass beads was created last year.

A new series of little delights are all over the work table this week.
I just love these wee little ones.
I call them "Weezies" because being little, I have to hold them much closer to work on, and little bits of fur go up my nose and make me sneezie!

These small bits of sweetness are just 7" tall and feel so nice and squeezie in my hand.

I've got big plans for these petite sweets.........

Finds from the Flea

Yesterday was Sunday fun day.
The Mister and I went to Elkhorn, for Wisconsin's biggest and best flea market.
It was good!!! Real good.
I came home with bags and bags of goodies.

The weather was perfect for strolling, er, dashing through the fields of vendors. We spent the day picking and poking...........and visiting with dealer friends.

A favorite find is this sweet doll trunk. It has hangers and two little drawers. It was those little drawers and blue paper lining I found so irresistible.
I grabbed up the little children's books and a pile of vintage doll dresses too.

I finished making this old, worn bear on Saturday. She just loves the trunk and all the treasures too.

And the shoes. Did you notice the darling shoes???
I just HAD to have them.

Another must have was this vintage sewing box.......
I added the vintage pincushions and millinery flowers as we walked the fields.

I also brought home vintage children's dresses....... a Victorian velvet caplet and a gorgeous antique child's brown mohair coat with cap.

It was my lucky day!

The hard part now is deciding who gets to wear what.
Who should play with the trunk.......or wear the shoes. Maybe little "Weezies" will nestle in them.

What's a "Weezie"? I'll tell you in my next post.

Biker Chic

I'm on a mission.
I walk, or I should say I try to walk.
Maybe if I stung a doughnut from a stick and hung it in front of me it would keep my attention and I'd really power walk.

Instead of the doughnut trick..
I want a bike!

The kind of bike like when I was a kid....no fancy schmancy frills......lots of speeds or hand grip breaks.
I want a cruiser.
A big, plump seat....fat tires, one speed and old fashioned brakes.
AND handle bars that won't make me look like the hunchback of Notre Dame!

Of course I'll need a basket. You know just in case.
In case I peddle past a yard sale or the doughnut man forces a bag of chocolate delights at me... I can put them in the basket.

I'm thinking I'll need a little bell or horn......just to warn you I'm coming.
Biggest decision..........what color????
Pink or turquoises????

I think a bike is just what I need.
Who knows. I might just make some new friends.

I'm off this week for a few days of fun with my gal pals.

I'm traveling to NYC to shop and play.
We'll also be attending the magical Golden Glow of Christmas convention.

Boxes of wintery Christmas delights have been shipped on ahead..........
my bags are packed and ready to go.

We'll be traveling by train...plane...and automobile.
I've got maps.......tickets and train station schedules tucked in my bag..........
Are we there yet?????

I'll post all about our adventures when I return .........

After six miserably hot days.........
I was beginning to feel like I was fading away.........

But, this morning the rain came!
The temps have dropped a wee bit and the air smells fresh again.
The garden blooms are dancing.
I'm taking advantage of the brief cool down and will try to do something productive today.

I spied this cool treat on "Southern Living".

With the temps soaring and me with no A/C........I have to be creative.
I'm sure these frozen pops with a splash of bubbly will do the trick......and be a fun way to keep cool!

It Must Be Summer

We're having a heat wave!
Like much of the country ..........the next few days are going to be a real scorcher.

The weather men are in hyper over drive.....the sky is falling! No, just putting everyone into a frenzy...like it's never been hot before. Gesh.

So, what's a girl to do? I'm digging through my closet and trying to come up with a hot weather...sprinkler running...water sliding.........wading pool ensemble.

Bingo! I think I might just have it!

Oh, won't this just send the neighbors gabbing and gawking!

I'm ready now.........time to dip my toes in the pool.

Making a List.........

And checking it twice!

I'm a lister. I couldn't function without my list of to-do's.
Every morning, without fail, while I sip my coffee and contemplate my day.............I review my list.
Everyday is written out with of the things I hope to accomplish. I don't have to even think where to begin my day.....the list tells me.
Someday's the to-do's are out of control and I know I will never get it all done. So, I just move them to the next day, and start all over again.
I do love making lists and I love at days end to cross things off.

Currently the list consists of all things Christmas!

Yep, it's hot, it's humid, it's July.........and I'm concocting Christmas goodies in the studio.
I'm preparing for fun filled days with gal pals at a Christmas Collectors Convention.

Guess what~ I can cross "blog post" off my list. :)

Litho Love

Today I'm sharing with you two of my favorite antique advertising lithographs.
These are part of Mister Steiner's collection......and lucky me..... I get to use them in our patriotic displays.

This Pillsbury litho dates to 1893......from the Chicago World's Fair.
It's 21" x 29".
The colors are rich and vibrant. I just love the Uncle Sam man.

This fireworks litho is a real beauty. It's another big piece, measuring 21" x 28", and dates to around 1890ish. It's soooooooo colorful and has so much going on.
In the bursting fireworks....there's a pig, elephant, fish and a hot air balloon. Why? I don't know why, but I think it's cool.

I have several and I love them!!!
This one is my very favorites.
A really old one..........and best part is the veggie men.

I took the gig outside for you to get a better pic. It's much to old and in such good condition that it must stay inside. Even tho it looks pretty good in the garden.

I think it's going to be a really cool piece for Halloween!
It's 20" x 26" and double sided.
Mister Steiner sure knows what I love!

Spots-a-lot

It's fun looking back at my past creations.........
I've got a thing for spotted beasties.

I created these probably 10 years ago. They were big!
I was making giraffe's 42" to 46 inches tall. They were great to dance with and a lot of fun to dress.

The last time I made a big giraffe was last December.

Then.........just a couple months ago I started making smaller spotted delights...........
oh, how I love this 19" size!

Well, you know what's coming............it just had to happen!
I've created yet another super sweet spotted friend.

I'm sooooooooooo loving this newest giraffe!!!!
He's just 13" tall...and is going to be sooooooooo much fun to play with!

A new garden bed is finally taking shape.........

Lots of digging..........hauling rocks and 8 yards of mulch later.....I'm almost done with this bed. Now to get some flowers potted.

It would have been so much easier and a lot more fun.........
if my "little love" would have been here to help me!
But, he'll be here in a couple short weeks to play with me.

I've always said my bears and beasties are better dressed than me. Well, now they are better accessorized too!

I've been having so much fun making pendents and brooches for the beasties.
They are really taking shape......vintage crepe paper ruffs...old buttons and lots of fun.

Yard Sale Inspiration

I don't usually do the yard sale thing..........but, last week I'm sure happy that I did!

I found this great antique Halloween lantern and the cool store display of X-Ray Vision glasses.
Being inspired by these new treasures..........and having a great excuse to do a little something Halloween.......
I dyed a piece of spicy pumpkin mohair and made this wonderful little guy.

Halloween is out of my system for the time being............it's time for me to be thinking.........Red - White & Blue!

Old Toy Fun

I love old toys.
I bet you already knew this if you've been following my blog the past couple of years.

I acquired this gem a couple weeks ago. A "picker" friend brought it to me, wondering if I would want it.
YES! I want it!!
The box rarely shows up with the wooden characters and it is in near mint condition.
The box is a stage, with a slight incline....... Olive Oyl, Popeye and Wimpy "walk".
It really makes me giggle.
I'll have to make room on a shelf in the studio today for this fun old toy.

A New Day...A New Bear

While cleaning /organizing closets .....
I came across a silly little hat I forgot I had!
So....I've been making a little bear.
I love finding forgotten treasures and being inspired all over again.

My collection of Schoenhut's "Humpty Dumpty Circus" characters are inspiring too.

Gently aged and loved..........this little Steiner Bear is 11 inches tall.

Peddling Along

I'm peddling as fast as I can these days. I had good intentions of having new offerings in my little shoppe blog this weekend.......but......this isn't going to happen.
My computer crashed Sunday night.
Yikes & Eckgads!!
A new computer has been ordered and it will hopefully be here by Monday.
In the meantime I'm sneaking into Mister Steiner's chair and using his computer.
I'm now hoping to open the little shop once again the week after Easter.

I'll keep you posted on an exact date. I've been creating special whimsey's and beasties, along with gathering a few vintage items too.

I was on a quest........looking for some particular cards. After paging through the first 3 binders.......I forgot what I was looking for! I hate when that happens.

But, I came across these sweet trade cards and wanted to share them with you.

A Good Week

Old man winter will just not let go........it's been a cold gray week and we've even had snow!
